STOCK #: AC050705-01RS CULTURE: Ancient Chinese DATE: c. Tang Dynasty, 618 A.D. - 907 A.D. MATERIAL(S): Terracotta (clay, ceramic) DIMENSIONS: 6.3" (160 mm) tall CONDITION: Worn but Solid and Intact. Some encrustations and faint hints of colour remaining. Stands upright without assistance. COMMENTS: This Ancient Tang Dynasty Terracotta Lady Tomb Figure appears to be bearing something, possibly a small. In the time when slavery was a societal norm in ancient China, living people were often buried with the dead as sacrifices. Fortunately, as time progressed, terracotta figures such as this one took the place of living sacrifices in tombs of the dead much as ushabtis were placed in the tombs of the ancient Egyptians. During the Tang Dynasty there appears to be an increase in the number of female tomb figures. These were portrayed in many roles including attendants, servants, singers and dancers. This figure is most likely a depiction of an attendant or servant. She wears her hair elaborately done up and sports a long skirt that touches the ground consistent with the aesthetics of the period. This is a wonderful opportunity to own an affordable, authentic artifact from the Tang Dynasty, a period regarded by historians as a high point in Chinese civilization. PROVENANCE: From an American dealer. Details will be provided to purchaser. *Prices in USD. This item is Guaranteed Authentic.
