COMMENTS: This beautiful Ancient Liao Dynasty Clay Buddhist Prayer Tile Tsa-Tsa features large depiction a single seated meditating Buddha. It has a light terracotta colour with an area of darkening on the right side and right half of the reverse.

This is a nice example of Buddhist votive clay tablets known as tsa-tsa (a name whose root has been traced back to Sanskrit). According to tradition, clay is transformed into a receptacle for sacred power when it is impressed with an image of a deity or holy symbol. Creation of such sacred objects, for use as votive offerings, relics or amulets, is to this day considered a meritorious action said to generate abundant auspiciousness for the maker, their family and surroundings. Whether it is used to decorate a wall, placed on an altar or held close, this tsa-tsa can be revered as sacred object and is undoubtedly a beautiful work of ancient Buddhist art.
