STOCK #: AC050821-02RS CULTURE: Ancient Chinese DATE: c. Ming Dynasty, 1368 – 1644 A.D. MATERIAL(S): Green Glazed Pottery (clay / terracotta) DIMENSIONS: 8.34" (21.2 cm) approx. height CONDITION: Some ancient abrasion, crazing and flaking of glaze; consistent with age. The glaze runs near the bottom typical of the ancient manufacturing technique used to make such pieces. Intact and choice with NO evidence of repairs nor restoration! COMMENTS: This rare Ming Dynasty vase features two dragons on its upper part and Buddhist symbols on the lower section. The upper and lower panels are separated by decorative scrollwork. The piece is moulded from two halves joined vertically and covered in an attractive thick green glaze atop of white slip / pigment. Objects known as “Ming qi" or "Ming chi,” like this vase, were placed in Chinese tombs to provide the deceased with the same things enjoyed in life, thus assuring immortality. This practice, most prevalent in the Han, Tang and Ming Dynasties, is reminiscent of the burial customs of the Ancient Egyptians. In the Ming Dynasty, burial with Mingqi was generally reserved for the elite, being commissioned by family members as symbols of power and wealth rather than being part of a set ritual. To date, we have only seen one other vase like the one being offer. Surprisingly, the other vase, sold in 2005 by a reputable Asian Art Dealer in the U.K., appears to be the sister piece to our vase. The two pieces are nearly identical and may have been made in the same location if not from the same set of moulds. It is a rare coincidence indeed for two such sister objects to survive the ravages of time. This is a rare opportunity to own an authentic, beautiful and rare work of Ming Dynasty art at a competitive price! PROVENANCE: From an American dealer. Full provenance will be provided to the purchaser. *Prices are in CAD$ and item is guaranteed authentic. Please see our Sales Policy and AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEE for full details. |
